Five Secrets For Finding Your Personal Style

Quick. How would you describe your personal style? Still thinking? If you're having a hard time coming up words to describe your style, or even picturing what that style is, it might be because you haven't yet discovered your personal style.

Secret #1: Dress for your shape--and learn what that is.
Most of us fall into one body-shape category. Chances are you're an hourglass, a spoon (larger on the bottom--also know as pear shaped), ruler, or inverted pyramid (larger on the top--also known as busty). For most shapes, it's about balance. But first, you need to recognize your body type. Even if you're quite positive you're a spoon because you've always been a spoon, look again. Take a photo of yourself in a bathing suit, and trace around your body. See that shape? That's what you should be dressing for.

Secret #2: Throw out preconceived ideas.
Don't ever utter the words "I could never wear that." While it's true that most of us could never wear those American Apparel gold lame? hotpants, just about every other style deserves a look and maybe a try-on. You will get to know what looks good and what doesn't, but don't limit yourself to one or two safe looks.

Secret #3: Find your style icon.
Grace Kelly? Jennifer Aniston? Find your style inspiration and use it to create your own look. Look to celebrities or even the person that inhabits the cubicle next to you at work. Don't copycat, though, or you might have a "Single White Female" stalking situation on your hands. Tear out photos of celebrities in looks you love and make a "look book" that you can take with you next time you go shopping.

Secret #4: Make small changes to your look.
Don't go from sporty spice to bombshell over night. Maybe you've decided to dress a bit sexier. Rather than exchanging the track suit for the catsuit, perhaps trade in the high-necked oversized men's t-shirt for a fitted v-neck t-shirt in a soft color. Unveil your style over time, and start with a few small changes.

Secret #5: No matter your style, choose clothing with impeccable fit.
Impeccable fit doesn't mean wearing the most expensive clothes. Whether it's Gucci or the Gap, perfectly tailored clothes look luxe. Those slacks from the Gap can look like a million bucks if you take the time to have them hemmed, rather than letting them drag on the ground.

Coco Chanel said, "Fashion fades, only style remains the same." Fashion can be mighty confusing at times, but you'll know your style when you see it.
