The sun's rays contain different forms of ultraviolet radiation known as UVA and UVB. That radiation causes the skin cells to produce melanin, giving skin that tan color, but also damages the cells and makes them more likely to mutate into skin cancer. Sunscreen must be reapplied periodically to remain effective.
