Dandruff can be caused by eczema or psoriasis. Shampoo that hasn't been fully rinsed off can appear like dandruff. Eczema is the most common cause of dandruff. It causes the scalp to turn red and flaky, and may itch. Psoriasis causes white, flaky areas, but does not itch. Over-the-counter dandruff shampoos and moderate sun exposure may help. If not, a dermatologists may prescribe stronger treatments.
