Wrestling involves a great deal of skin-to-skin contact. Epidemics are not uncommon. Recently five schools in Northeastern Pennsylvania have had to postpone their programs because of herpes gladiatorium, also known as mat herpes. Symptoms include lesions, a sore throat, swollen lymph nodes or a tingling in the skin. Infected wrestlers have been unable to resume activities until cleared by a physician.
