UT Device Could Take The Pain Out Of Skin Cancer Detection

A new scanning device being developed at the University of Texas may one day be used to detect skin cancer without the need for a biopsy. The device is the size of a pen and is used to shine light into the skin. Cancerous moles absorb light differently than nonconcerous moles, so a computer attached to the device measures the light's intensity to detect cancer.
