Just The Green-Eyed Monster...or Something More?
by Shannon Dauphin
Jealousy is known as the green-eyed monster for a reason--the feeling of jealousy is a monstrous, terrible thing that can crumple even the most confident woman's self-esteem and destroy her most intimate relationships. Fortunately, time proves that most jealousy is unfounded. But sometimes your subconscious is screaming for attention, and you know it's not just a passing phase.
Here's an example: Imagine you and your partner are attending a party at your local hotspot when his ex-girlfriend shows up. From the moment she says hello, you know she's up to no good. There's nothing you can pinpoint--you just know it. It's something that you can't shake, no matter how logical you usually are.
What is Jealousy?
Webster defines jealousy as "hostile toward a rival." Envy is a synonym for jealousy, and the definition of envy is "painful or resentful awareness of another's advantages." So when you feel jealousy, you're seeing the aim of your jealousy not only as a rival, but someone who is better than you.
No wonder jealousy is such a powerful emotion!
What Does He Think?
The key to knowing whether your jealousy is founded lies in the way your partner acts. If your new beau goes out of his way to avoid his ex, there might be a reason behind his reluctance to let the two of you get to know each other. On the other hand, if your partner seems a little too eager to talk to his ex, that might be a warning sign as well.
Watch the way your boyfriend and his ex interact. Is he a bit too friendly, leaning in a bit too close? Do they share private jokes and leave you out of their conversation? Does he attempt to pick a fight with you after you are out of her earshot? All of those situations are big green flags waving for your attention!
But if your partner gives you all the romance and treats his ex as a friend, nothing more, then you have nothing to worry about. In that case you can chalk it up to a weak moment and let it go. Most jealousy turns out this way, and you will laugh at your silly self later.
Shake Off the Monster
Have you tried every logical angle and you still can't seem to shake the jealousy? Remind yourself of this: She might be different than you, but she's not better than you. Furthermore, there is a reason your partner is with you instead of her. Keep that in mind the next time you feel that jealous bone start to ache!
