Mom And Dad Always Said...
I remember when I was growing up, my parents would always tell me that it was best to communicate with the person you were dating - no matter what, you had to make sure that you were both open and honest with each other. As a teen, struggling with dating and everything that goes along with it, I just nodded my head and really didn't listen to them. (Kind of like how every other teen approaches 'relationship' advice from their parents) I assumed it meant spilling your guts to your mate and telling them all of your most private thoughts. Interestingly enough, as I got older, I realized that my parents were right about communication - but it wasn't ONLY about private thought communication - it was much more general.
Relationships are confusing. They are a combination of being friends, lovers, housemates and a lot more. As I realized the fact that relationships were made up of so many different kinds of classifications, it made me realize that seeing as communication is a must with all of those classifications, it must be important in my relationships. Confused yet? Let me explain.
If I don't communicate with my friends, our friendship normally dwindles - I need to chat, talk about things, phone each other, email - it's just part of being friends.
If I don't communicate with my lover - things may go terribly wrong - we all have needs and it's important to share them with each other.
If I don't communicate with my housemates, the living situation can get pretty hectic - chores don't get done, the mortgage doesn't get paid, daily living isn't as fun as it could be.
Keeping all of that in mind and given that my relationship, and really every relationship, is a combination of many different types of things - I came to the conclusion that communication is an imperative. It doesn't only have to be about your feelings, however. Talking about daily events, current events, house chores, what you had for lunch - heck, it's all extremely important to get us on the same page and become the best couple possible.
So, take it from me, and communicate - it doesn't always have to be serious - but it will always prove a positive experience.
