Becoming A Parent: Are You Ready?

by Shannon Dauphin

You probably know the feeling: Your friend's new baby smiles up at you with those toothless gums and your heart melts. You look at your partner with a renewed sense of romance, and your biological clock ticks so loud, it keeps you up at night. All you can think about is having a baby of your own.

But are you really ready to be a parent? Before you answer, here are some things to think about.

Parenting is Expensive
Diapers, formula, and doctor's visits don't come cheap. If you see a baby in your future, start preparing now by putting money into savings, cutting back on expenses, paying down loans and credit card balances, and taking an honest look at your financial situation. Will you need a bigger house? Will you require time off work? Can you afford daycare expenses when you do go back to work, or will you be able to stay at home with your child for those first few years?

Parenting is Physical
Is your body prepared for the stress of pregnancy and delivery? Visit your doctor and make certain everything is as it should be before you begin trying to conceive. If you need to lose weight or get health problems under control, now is the time. Now is also a good time to look over your health insurance policy to determine whether prenatal visits and birth expenses are covered.

Parenting is Emotional
When a new baby joins the household, your schedule will revolve around the new addition. Your ordered life will be turned upside down, and that can wreak havoc on anyone's emotions. Occasionally depression will rear its ugly head during those first few weeks at home with your baby, and your relationship with your partner might suffer some strain.

Prepare for those difficulties now by having a strong support system in place. Work on your relationship with your partner to make sure it is strong and secure before you take the plunge into parenthood. Don't expect everything to be perfect and manageable during those first few months--it seldom happens the way you envisioned.

Are You Ready for a Baby of Your Own?
Once you've taken a careful look at the emotional, physical, and financial considerations of parenting, ask yourself again if you're ready to have a baby. If you are, then you're in for one of the best rides of your life! Being a parent is a fulfilling, joyful, and beautiful experience that will leave you in awe of this little person you created.
