Do You Fear Success?

It's as inescapable as the common cold--the yearly tidal wave of how-to books that give formulas for becoming famous, powerful, and successful. But it's doubtful that these books work for even a few of the millions who purchase them. Why? Human nature. No matter how sound an author's advice, many readers will be blocked because they have a fear of achieving their dreams.

Books usually won't help a “success-avoider,” someone who has a deep-rooted fear of achieving. But what is success? There is no one answer. The psychoanalyst Alfred Adler, a disciple of Sigmund Freud, once said, “What an individual thinks or feels is success is unique with him.” For some, it may be a goal that is unattainable; hence, they don't ever feel successful. Rather, their lives are spent in continual dissatisfaction, striving for larger and larger prizes. These are perfectionist types who are rarely satisfied with themselves (or anyone else, for that matter). They are usually workaholics who compulsively strive to attain an impossible dream. Chances are good that they have an innate dread of ever securing what they seek.

Although each person's definition of success may vary, those who fear it tend to have certain perceptions in common. To learn if you might harbor a few of these negative attitudes about winning, take the following quiz.
