Money. Throughout history, wars have been fought over it, religions have denounced it as a danger to one's soul, and most crimes have been committed for it, in one way or another. Money is a powerful motivator. When it beckons, many people have difficulty resisting its call.

No matter what our economic level, we all have a “dollar personality,” a cluster of attitudes about money. There are three basic “money personalities”--perhaps you'll see yourself in one of them:

Compulsive spenders: This group feels uneasy about holding on to money. They believe that if they accumulate earnings, they must also bear the unwelcome responsibility for its management. This generates anxiety. Compulsive spenders feel emotionally secure when they're free to spend. Through buying and owning items, they gain a false sense of assurance and security.

Compulsive hoarders: Hoarders perceive money as an extension of their egos, and to them, giving up money is like losing a part of themselves. They have a compelling drive to keep and protect their cash as if it were their very lifeblood.

Compulsive risk-takers: These people are basically magical thinkers guided by a grandiose notion that they can win the universe if they wish hard enough for it. For them, winning at a game, gambling, or engaging in speculative business or stock ventures symbolizes immortality.
