Some years ago, a family friend who was pregnant visited us. She related that her baby was two weeks overdue. Attempting to understand our friend’s dismay, my five-year-old son David tried to console her by saying, “Don’t feel so bad, Mrs. Hays. After all, nobody’s perfect.”
Indeed, no one is perfect, and no one knows this better than human relations professionals. Psychologists have expounded on the theme of man’s development, using terms like “self-actualization,” “becoming,” and “human fulfillment” to describe the human growth process at all levels--physical, psychological, and spiritual.
No matter how humble or exalted, we all move toward realizing our basic potential. This is evidenced in a child who studies to pass a test, a businessperson who does volunteer work in the community, or an athlete who tries to break a record. It is a continuing process of fulfilling our capacities.
The late Dr. Abraham Maslow pointed out that our inner nature, though it may be abused or misunderstood, “persists underground and [is] forever pressing for actualization.” In other words, in the process of attaining our goals, we strive to fulfill our potential.
Behavioral scientists have identified indicators that reveal whether or not we are fulfilling our potential. For fifteen years, behavioral scientist Ronald Taft conducted a series of studies to identify those people who power their potential. He calls them “ego permissive” types. The following quiz is adapted from Taft’s questionnaires.
To what degree are you a self-actualizer? Your answers will require some fairly intense introspection.
